Why is this article important?
Macy’s has begun a new gimmick where you can get an instant discount on goods if the price drops within 14 days and they also have introduced a $10 off coupon every time you spend $75. Unfortunately, these coupons are invalid without your receipt. The merchant tries to blame VISA for not providing them with information but in my view, Macy’s knows which credit cards are used so it cannot be VISA that they would need to know anything. It is common practice for merchants to require a receipt even when using gift cards but many states’ laws don’t apply here because these aren’t something that’s paid directly by the cardholder (it’s just something charged). Knowing how much your card has in it is a GOD-GIVEN RIGHT and you should not have to jump through hoops to get it! My advice is if you shop at Macy’s or plan to do so, buy an extra gift card for yourself each time you shop there. Keep these cards away from the store as much as possible because they are magnetic stripe cards and could be cloned easily. That way, even if they refuse to give you your own receipt (which I doubt they would) with a valid ID or SSN that includes proof of residency, one will still accept your card number safely.
How do I get a live person at Macy’s?
They’re really good at what they do. The answer is actually much more nuanced and complicated than you think, but not for the reasons you might expect.
I started doing phone work in 2011 as a temporary measure to fill in between new jobs while I was writing my Master’s thesis on stress from bike commuting to graduate school in Virginia Beach. However, when that study came out and I got a solid job offer from NOAA (my actual dream job), something inside of me didn’t want to go back to being inactive and sitting behind a desk until retirement age. So instead, over the next five years, I repeatedly emailed Macy’s corporate office every few months offering my services and asking if there were any opportunities for part-time seasonal work.
I got no response for the first two years, but then there was finally a need for a seasonal worker and I was given an interview. I didn’t make it through that one (as if anyone would), but after another year of correspondence, I was asked to come in for a second round of interviewing where they brought me downtown and made me do something completely different at each place they took me. They also did background checks including contacting my graduate school advisor who kindly wrote back with only good things to say about me. This process took six months from start to finish and at the end of it all, even though I had zero retail experience – I got hired on as “Shop Associate 3” for Macy’s in Virginia Beach!
